Business rates

Business rates are almost a certainty if you occupy a business premises. The rateable value — a reflection of the property's rental value — determines how much you pay, and business rates are typically around 43–45% of that rateable value, making them one of the largest overheads for most organisations.

Rateable values can be challenged, and can change if a premises is altered or if its value is affected by changes in the local area. Some limited classes of property are exempt from business rates altogether.
